6 Travel Essentials for Family Getaways in Phuket

If you’re thinking of taking a family trip to Phuket, you are guaranteed to find activities for everyone in the family to participate in and have fun. When travelling with children however, it can present its own set of challenges. This is compounded further when going so far away from home where the cultures and the familiar might not readily be accessible.

While Phuket offers many modern conveniences and amenities, there are some essentials you will still need to take care of to ensure that you can enjoy peace of mind while on your family vacation. Here are six of them.

  1. Make a List of Clothing Items for each Family Member

One of the first challenges many encounter is what to pack. You really don’t want to over pack with the weight restrictions on luggage while travelling, but on the flip side you don’t want to under pack and leave critical items you might need, especially with being so far away from home.

The best approach to this situation is to write a list of things you are sure to need. Phuket enjoys a tropical climate and so lighter and natural fabric clothing would be best suited to keep cool in the warm temperatures. The atmosphere is generally laid back and so casual clothing is generally acceptable. You may want to include some casually elegant pieces for dinner.

On the plus side if you do find that you are in need of clothing while there, the cost of clothes is quite reasonable and so you should be able to pick up tasteful pieces without denting your budget.

Make a List of All Essential Travel Documents

Your list making is not quite over. To ensure that you have all the necessary travel documentation and other important items such as medications you will need to make a list for these as well. These essential items are best stowed in your carry on and hand luggage. Items such as the passports, medical insurance, plane tickets, prescription medications and copies of the prescriptions, keys for luggage, money in the local currency and also your own, cheques and credit cards, are all essentials that you will need to have with you.

  1. Items to Keep Younger Children Comfortable

Your journey to Phuket may be quite a long one so it is not uncommon for younger children to become restless and start playing the ‘are we there yet?’ game. Careful planning and forethought will mean including items that can keep them occupied during the long flight. These may include books for reading, colouring or with puzzles, crayons and pencils, electronic devices loaded with games they will enjoy or maybe even their favourite toy to help pacify them during a possible meltdown.

The same considerations will apply while staying at the hotel. It may take them a while to adjust to falling asleep in new surroundings so their favourite sleep toy or blanket, something which can help to ease the temporary transition, will be helpful to take along.

  1. Sunscreen

While in Phuket, you and your family will likely be spending a lot of time on the beach. You will want to include your trusted sunscreen in your checked luggage to protect yourself and your family from the sun’s harmful rays especially between the hours of 10am and 4pm. If you do happen to forget it, there is no need to worry. The convenience stores around are sure to have sunscreen on hand. This is an item none of them would be without given the nature of the climate. You want to use it generously and reapply as often as is necessary for maximum protection.

  1. Know Where the Major Medical Facilities are Located and Other Emergency Services

There are two international standard hospitals in Phuket. The Phuket international hospital located in Phuket town and the Bangkok Phuket International hospital also in Phuket town. It would be good for you to note this information as well as the addresses and phone numbers and have them readily available and on your person in the event of an emergency.

Do this before you leave for your trip. It would be useful to pack this information in the same place where you will keep all your important travel documents and other important documentation.

At this point it would also be good to make a note of the emergency numbers also such as the general police, tourist police, and ambulance service.

  1. Power Converter Chords

Travelling with a power converter will ensure that you will have no issues charging your electronic devices such as your phone, camera and tablet. It is quite likely in this part of the world that the electrical outlets may be different than the ones you have back home. Taking this proactive step will ensure that you stay connected and also will be able to take all the photos you’d like.
